Money Saving Technique of the Week #1

Did you know that if you take a ten minute shower every day, that shower costs you $2.00 on average?  That includes the cost of water and the use of your water heater.  If you could cut that ten minute shower to five minutes, you can reduce the cost of that shower by almost $1.00!  A buck sure isn't what it used to be, but a dollar saved is a dollar earned.  The plain and simple truth?  If only you reduced your shower by five minutes and on average you shower twenty times per month, you can save $20 per month or almost $240 every year!  $240 in your pocket and you are able to free up five more minutes of your day.  Did I mention that these savings can be even greater if more than one person in yourNot too shabby if you ask me!

Icing on the cake?  Try installing a new tankless water heater!  While the up front costs will cost you, you can save on average $20-$25 a month on your electric or gas bill!  If you want even MORE savings, try installing a shower head that reduces the flow rate of water.  These shower heads are readily available, cheap, and environmentally friendly as well!  Combine all three of these money saving techniques and you are well on your way to your financial goal!

Until Then...

Welcome to the new you!

Hello everyone! Please let me take the time to introduce myself. My name is Brent, but some people call me the Home Budget Guru. Ok, not really, but wouldn't that be sweet if it were true? I am 31 years old, married to the love of my life, and we have one son and are expecting a daughter this summer. I'm a teacher by day and a dreamer by night. About 7 years ago I decided to make home budgeting a hobby of mine and for the last 5 years I have mastered it. I am proud to report that my method of budgeting, paying bills, and saving supplemental income has allowed me to pay off more than $22,000 in debt for each of the last three years. Yes, it is that effective and yes, we were that far in debt

Now most people WANT to live a healthier financial lifestyle but few of us actually do. I have found in my years of mastering my method that home budgeting and living a financially responsible lifestyle is a lot like being healthy. If you put your mind to it, you will pay off debt and you will live the type of life that most people only dream of. The only thing that can stop you is...well, you. And losing a job of course, but we'll save that for another time

A search for how to budget your home finances obviously lead you here, so you know it is time for a change. Before we get into the specifics of my plan, I want you to close your eyes and imagine the following scenario

You wake up on a Saturday morning to the sound of birds chirping and kids playing outside in the neighborhood. Upon going downstairs you put on a pot of coffee and step outside to grab the morning paper. After reading the morning news and sipping your caffeine, you log on to your bank account to see if your latest transfer to savings has dropped. You see a balance of $10,000 in your savings account and $3,000 in your checking. After verifying the balance, you plan for a shopping trip with the wife and kids. You set a limit of $500 for the upcoming day of fun. Lunch, the mall, and lots of shopping for everyone is in store. You look at your outstanding balances of any student loans, personal loans, credit cards, and auto loans and see a $0 balance. No debt (besides your mortgage), no worries, no limits. You are living at the top of the hill and you've worked hard to get there. Now it's time to enjoy life, family, and stress-free finances

Ok, so it might seem a bit cheesy, I get that. However, compare YOUR situation to the scenario above. Would you trade your current situation for theirs? I know 7 years ago I sure would have! Every time we look to make a change we need a goal.  Take a minute to think about what your goal is.  Make it lofty but realistic.  Jot it down, and imagine how happy you will be when you get there.  You are ready to make a change, you are ready to live the life you've always wanted, NOW is the time.

I hope you'll read through my posts and follow my advice and share your successes with me. Welcome to a new world. Welcome to a new goal. Welcome to the new YOU!
